    Walnutta was built in 1906 by Ellen Lively with the aid of a woman architect and is one of the few known works of an early twentieth century woman architect in West Virginia. The home is a rather tall 2� story Queen Ann Victorian style home with a gabled roof and German clapboard siding. Originally designed in an L-shaped, the home has been filled out over the years. Projecting 2� story polygonal bays with pedimented gable roofs are to the south and west. The rooms all have exceptionally large windows allowing for fantastic natural light in the home. An expansive wraparound porch complete with porch swing provides peaceful views across the rural countryside. Sitting in the swing, one can enjoy many evenings of beautiful sunsets across the surrounding farmland.

    Walnutta is located in the Pickaway Rural Historic District which is on the National Register of Historic Places and was featured in Morton’s 1916 book “Monroe County History”.

    PICKAWAY RURAL HISTORIC DISTRICT

    As described in the Historic Register annotations, the Pickaway Rural Historic District is level to moderately rolling land surrounded by moderately hilly land devoted to pasture and is backed in the distance by Peters Mountain or the Allegheny Front to the east and south; by Swopes Knobs and the Appalachian Mountains to the west. The very prominent Bicketts Knob to the west is seen from all areas of the historic landscape. Peters Mountain is named after Peter Wright.

    The landscape within the Pickaway Rural Historic District continues as an agricultural resource after two hundred years as Monroe County’s premier agricultural example, maintaining its nineteenth and early twentieth century agricultural integrity. {Section 7, Page 1; Page 5}

    THE SURROUNDING AREA

    Just 1 mile up the road is a convenience store/gas station and a place to grab a bite to eat.

    The charming village of Union, which is the Monroe County seat, is just a 5 minute drive to the South. Banking, healthcare facilities, drugstore, grocery shopping and a great family restaurant are readily available. Some of the friendliest people in West Virginia can be found in Monroe County. Monroe County has a population of about 13,000 residents and does not have a stoplight and has more cattle and sheep than people. In additional to the local pizza place, two local restaurants can be found in downtown Union packed each morning for breakfast and then again for lunch at the Kalico Kitchen and Korner Kafe.

    Lewisburg, which is the Greenbrier County seat, was voted the Coolest Small Town in American in 2011 and is just a 15 minute drive to the thriving downtown historic district. The downtown boasts a year round live theatre, Carnegie Hall, several fabulous restaurants, antique shops and boutiques. There is also a modern hospital and all attendant medical facilities along with all the big box stores.

    The Greenbrier County Airport, which has WV’s longest runway, is located just 30 minutes away and has daily flights to Atlanta and Washington DC. The world famous Greenbrier Resort is an easy 25 minute drive and Snowshoe Ski Resort is about 2 hours. Roanoke is 90 minutes, DC is 4 hours and Charlotte is 3 hours away.

    MORGAN ORCHARD has been operating since 1896 and offers a beautiful country setting with the opportunity to pick your own berries, peaches, apples or vegetables. This fantastic resource is just 5 minutes up the road as well.
