Have you visited Fayetteville, WV? If not, you are in for a treat! Tucked in the heart of the New River Gorge, Fayetteville is an ever-growing tourist destination. From fun and exhilarating outdoor adventures, amazing and unique restaurants, great music, and gorgeous scenery, Fayetteville has it all.
Nationally renowned for its white water rafting, Fayetteville rafting outlets offer trips on both the New River (Upper and Lower) and the Gauley. This past summer, my family and I traveled down the New River with a guide friend of mine that works for Adventures on the Gorge. Along with another family, we deftly navigated the Class 4 and 5 rapids that challenged our strengths, abilities, and teamwork skills. It was fun, scary, and definitely an adventure to remember.

Along with rafting, outlets offer adventure courses. Zip lining, ropes courses, rappelling, horseback riding, and obstacle courses are just some of their offerings. ACE Adventure Resort hosts a 5-acre water park that is filled with slides, inflatables, a zip line, and a beach perfect for volleyball or soaking up the sun. The water park is most notable for the BLOB – an inflatable that extends into the lake where people are launched into the air by someone jumping off of a platform behind them. The park is a great little gem perfect for family fun.
Bridge Day is an event not to be missed. Once a year in the fall, BASE jumpers fling themselves off of the New River Gorge Bridge – the fourth highest (3,030 ft.) single span arch bridge in the world and parachute safely into the gorge below. Spectators and jumpers alike travel from all over to attend this unique festival. Vendors and bands also add to the entertainment of the day and the parties continue late into the night.
Finally, the FOOD! For such a cozy town, Fayetteville offers an amazing selection of fantastic restaurants. Each with its own unique menu and style, you can guarantee you will leave them full and satisfied. Big Dam Pizza is the newest addition to the culinary scene. Just as its name would suggest, their pizzas are HUGE! 28 inches of delicious New York-style pizza with a perfectly crispy crust and homemade sauce that will make your mouth water, their pizzas are not for the faint of heart. BDP also offers a full menu of other delectable items including homemade fruit pies. Other notably excellent restaurants to try are Pies and Pints, which is nationally know for it’s one-of-a-kind grape and gorgonzola pie), Secret Sandwich Society, and Gumbo’s.
