Private 15-acre estate bordered by creek, with your own natural spring and pond. 2-bedroom, 2-bath custom-designed home. Extensive plantings and gardens, spectacular sunrise and sunset mountain views. Additional 72 acres available separately.

Less than a minute from U.S. 219 and 10 minutes from Union, this very private retreat is a nature lover’s wonderland and a master gardener’s dream. Covered porches face east and west, and an airy, light-filled design brings the outdoors inside. Landscaped with a variety of native and non-native species and low-maintenance perennials, the property overlooks Indian Creek and a scenic covered bridge.

Originally a simple 1930’s farmhouse, the house was taken down to the frame and re-imagined with cedar siding and a metal roof. The stone foundation was replaced with cinderblock, and wings were added for the kitchen, dining room and bedrooms.

A winding driveway leads to the brick-paved parking area. An entry with a tile floor and recessed lighting leads to the kitchen. A mud room/half-bath is just off this area.

The modern, spacious kitchen features custom birch cabinetry with stained glass doors, a double porcelain sink, track lighting, an island with a Jenn-Air electric range, a Kitchen Aid refrigerator freezer, a built-in Jenn-air wall oven, and a Maytag dishwasher. The kitchen includes a sitting/reading area with a built-in bookcase. This area could also be used as a breakfast nook.

The dining room has a chandelier and recessed lighting, and 5 large windows providing panoramic views.

The living room has an atrium design, with a high ceiling and balconies above. A woodstove set in the original brick fireplace adds to the room’s coziness, and a built-in corner hutch-entertainment center to its usefulness. Attractive wide-plank wood flooring is used here and in throughout most of the house. East and west-facing porches flank two sides of the living room. The west porch features a wisteria vine which frames the view perfectly, and leads to a stone patio laced with fragrant thyme and views of Indian Creek.

The master bedroom has plantation shutters and recessed lighting. The master bath has a travertine tile floor, a jetted soaking tub, a bidet, and a vanity with a marble top and porcelain sink.

The second bedroom faces east and has recessed lights. The second bath has a travertine tile floor, a shower, a pedestal sink.  A large walk-in closet with built-in organization system provides plenty of space and storage.

A wood staircase leads to the second level. Essentially a large, four-sided loft overlooking the living room, this space lends itself as an office or library, a studio or a playroom.

A door on the west end of the house exits to the garden. Lilies, peonies, herbs and berries thrive in this garden, “deer proof” because of a high wooden fence. Plenty of room to plant a garden, yet enough perennials planted that the garden is even beautiful in the dead of winter.  The garden area includes raised beds, a garden potting shed, compost piles and a barn. Just beyond this area, the gently sloping field affords a spectacular view of the historic Indian Creek covered bridge.

The mature landscaping around the home includes a virtual arboretum of species: birch trees, ornamental grasses, lilacs, hydrangeas, Japanese maples, flowering cherries, azaleas, rhododendrons, and magnolia bushes and trees, to name just a few. The mature, well-established plants are drought-resistant and require little attention and no watering.  The estate was professionally planned and lovingly planted by a horticulturist.  Year round there is a multitude of plants and blooms to please the eye.

All the windows in the home were replaced with thermal windows in 2015. Approximately one acre around the house has underground pet fencing.

A beautiful, tranquil, nature-centered home, Indian Creek Retreat is located in Monroe County, just south of the town of Union. With a population of 13,000 and no traffic lights, Monroe County is far from the hustle and bustle of city life. Lewisburg, which was named the Coolest Small Town in America in 2011, is a half-hour drive. Lewisburg offers boutique shopping, fine dining, year-round theatre and concerts, two food festivals, a literary festival, and the annual State Fair of West Virginia. The world-famous Greenbrier resort is in nearby White Sulphur Springs, and Snowshoe Mountain Ski Resort is a 2-hour drive to the north on scenic country roads.
